In Kerala temples have great role in the life of people living around it. Every place have its own deity called 'deshanathan'. We have to please him before all important events.
'Nirmalyam', 'Abhishekam', 'nedyam' , 'sheeveli', 'Pushpanjali' , 'Sreekovil', 'Thanthri', 'Varyar', 'Marar', 'Mothathu', 'melshanthi', 'keezhshanti', 'vazhipadu', 'Utsavabali', 'Pradakshinam' and 'Thirumeni' these terms are related to temples.
Temples have lot of rituals connected with the people around it. 'Utsavams' are one of that kind. 'Parayeduppu utsavam' is a main festival of every temple. Chief diety visits every devotee's house once in an year. That is known as 'para edukkal'. Para is a measuring instrument for grains. In older days everyone offered rice to the diety during his house visit. Then he bless the whole family. There will be different items to offer. 'Arippara', Nelpara,Aval para.malar para, sharkara para and pazham para. Some devi temples have manjal para also. During para we have to fill a changazhi and a nazhi also. These are smaller versions of para. 'Thidambu' will be on the top an elephant accompanied by 'thalapoli' and panchavadya.

'Thalapoli' is also a speciality of Kerala. Mostly it is carried by ladies. A vessel full of flowers to welcome a very important member to a function or in temples. Some times this contain a lamp inside the 'thattam'. Some place half coconut with lamp to make the occasion more special. In our weddings also its an inevitable part to welcome bride and groom.

For Anpoli we have to fill five paras, five changazhis and five nazhis.

Now almost all the temple changed their rituals of parayeduppu. Diety will not visit everyone's home, we can offer paras at kodimara chuvadu(below the flag post). There will be elephants and pachavadya in Aanakkottil. Its very auspicious to take part in the event.
During my childhood house will be cleaned for parayeduppu. Every road will be cleaned to welcome the diety. In front of the gate a small welcome shed will be made with dry coconut leaves(medanja ola). The floor must be cleaned with cow dung and kolams will be drawn with rice powder. The whole shed will be decorated with tender coconut leaves. Then we will place bronze lamps and para will be placed on a banana leaf. Fire crackers and panchvadya will make the event more colourful. Every keralite have a memory of 'para edukkal'

The Mahasivrathri Festival at Thrikkuratti Temple

The Mahasivrathri festival at Thrikkuratti Mahadeva temple is different from other temples due to its unique festivities. Though the spectacular and colourful cultural programs are performed by renowned artists during these eleven days, the main emphasis is for Sahasrakalasabishekam, Sivarathri Nrutham and Mahasivarathri Procession.

Sahasrakalasabishekam

This is a very special and rare puja conducted during 10 days of Mahasivarathri festival. It is well known that Lord Siva is abhishekapriya (lover of ablutions). Lord Parasurama and Kroshta muni, during their worship of the lord here, are believed to have bathed the deity with Sahasrakalasam or a thousand pots of holy water according to Vedic rites. Now during Mahasivarathri festival days the Head Priest (Thanthri) and his team perform this puja. It is a ten day function, each day an offering of 101 Kalasam or pots of holy water being made 100 pots of Silver and one of Gold at do centre all filled with water and surcharged with mantras recited by learned Brahmins seated on the Mukhamantapam. These are emptied on the deity, the golden pot Brahmakalasam being the last one. A magnificent light is the indication or identity of Lord Shiva and the Shiva Lingam is considered to be the symbol of it. Hence, the formal worship on Maha Shivratri consists of bathing the Shiva Lingam. Lord Shiva is said to be burning with the fire of austerity and so only those items are offered to Him that have a cooling effect. A cool water bath is believed to propitiate Him best. There is a belief among devotees that participation in Sahasrakalam will lead to blessings with prosperity. Hundreds of devotees thronging the shrine with chants of “Namasivaya”, “Hara hara mahadeva”, and “Sambho Mahadeva”.

Sivarathri Nrutham

Sivarathri Nrutham at Thrikkuratti temple, according to religious scholars, resembles with , the cosmic dance of Shiva, called ‘Anandatandava,' meaning, ‘the Dance of Bliss’ symbolizes the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction, as well as the daily rhythm of birth and death. The dance is a pictorial allegory of the five principle manifestations of eternal energy - creation, destruction, preservation, salvation, and illusion. The Priest keeps sheeveli vigraha (idol) fixed on decorated frame on his head. He makes seven rounds on pradakshina vazhi (Holi walkway make of granite around Sanctum Santorum). When fifth round reaches at west nada (Parvathi nada), the door opens for just 10 minutes. This is an annual ceremony. Thousands of Pilgims rush to have a glance of this auspicious moment. At this time all the pradakshina vazhi will be lighted with Camphor and Brass lanterns and hundreds of devotes who spent a sleepless night with chants of “Namasivaya”, “Hara Hara Mahadeva” and “Sambho Mahadeva”. Old people cry “Hara sankara siva sankara duritham kala sivane”. In this enlightened serene mood, the Priest performs Nrutham and runs along pradakshina vazhi towards east nada. Next two rounds he accepts “Valiya kanikka”. The Sivarathri Nrutham is followed by the well known magnificent display of fireworks.Mahasivarathri Procession On Sivarathri day evening a grand procession starts from Kadapra Kainikkara Temple. It includes, several decorated floats, Kaavadi Aaatam, Mayilattom, Amman Kudom, Thaiyyam, Vela kali, Kuthiyotta chuvadu, richly caparisoned elephants and folk art forms etc attracts thousands of devotees and tourists. When the main procession reaches Market Junction, other similar processions from Kurattikkadu Mutharamman Temple, Kurattissery Kannamkavil Mutharamman Temple, Thrippavoor Mahavishnu Temple and Alumoodu Sivaparvathy Temple joins and altogether making the procession quite enlivening. The marvellous as well as magical effect of the Sinakari melam and Panchavadyam, a combination of five percussion and wind instruments is to be felt and enjoyed. Among the varieties of festivals celebrated in Kerala, Thrikkuratti Sivarathri Procession is one of the most thunderous, spectacular and dazzling. It is an expression of popular fascination for sound and colour, and because of the pageantry, it appeals to all people including foreigners. Once the procession reaches tample, Deeparadhana followed by colourful display of fireworks.

Views from Irumbupalam (Iron bridge). Irumbu palam connects Maradu and Thripunithura. It is also a historical monument of the royal era. The bridge is at the western part of Sri poornathrayeesha temple. It was built in 1895 by the British emperors. Then it was meant for the bullock carts and horse drawn rikshaws. In 1990 a major maintanence work had done. Now its main bottle neck area in that road.

Radha Lakshmi Vilasam College of Music was established in the year 1936 by the Maharaja of Kochi. Now it is under the Kerala Government offering 13 degree courses and 11 post graduate courses. Disciplines include Veena, Violin, Mridangam, Chenda, Maddalam, Kathakali, Kathakali music, Bharatha natyam, Mohiniyattom, Painting and Applied art.
This prestigious institution was functioned in an old building at a pathetic condition. On September 18th of 2008 the new building was inaugurated by Minister of Education Mr.M A Baby. Former students and musical stalwarts like K J Yeshudas and Thiruvizha Jayashanker were also present at the historical moment.
The new building had two blocks and four floors with an area of 8,300 sq. feet. Each floor will be devoted to different art form. There are 55 class rooms in total.

Vidyaramham is a very important function in Kerala. Vidyarambham is observed in the Vijayadashami day of Navarathri. Evenif it is a hindu tradition, now it is followed by other religions to start the formal education of Children. Vidyarambham or 'Ezhuthiniruthal' is the starting of Education in a temple or other cultural institutions. 'Vidya' means Knowledge and 'Aarambham' means starting.
Children must not cross 3 years. There will be priests or eminent persons in the temple for vidyarambham. Writing in rice is considered auspicious, so first they will write in rice and then using a golden ring they will write on the tongue of the child. 'Hari sree ganapathaye namaha avighnamasthu' is the first alphabets. There will be an atmosphere of the first day of the school with crying sounds .
This day we can start any arts like dance or music. In Kerala in this day students give 'dakshinas'(a traditional offering with beetel leaves ,aracnut and coin) to teachers to have their blessings. Elders also write Malayalam letters in sand or rice after Saraswathi Pooja. Panachikkadu saraswathi temple, Thiruvullakkavu Sri Dharmashastha temple, Chottanikkara Devi temple and Paravur Mookambi temple are well known places for Vidyarambham. There we can have early registration for Vidyaramham.

A spectacular event conducted at Sree Subrahmanya swamy temple, Perunna on the last day of Karkkidakam month. A huge Ravana, made with hay and fire crackers was the chief attraction. Other characters in the Ramayana was also present. Sri rama, Lakshmana, Hanuman and a lot of Vanaras. Every head was fired with an asthram. At last Ravana ended with a big blast. This function was conducted as the last event of Valamiki Ramayana reading in the temple.

There will be permanant members gathering in mornings to have hot coffee or tea. Talking global issues and sipping hot coffee in cool mornings is a hobby of most people in rural areas.

VADAKKUMNATHAN TEMPLE

The temple is at the heart of Thrissur town and at the centre of the 'Thekkinkadu Maidan' the venue of Thrissur pooram, Spectacular festival of Kerala. Chief deity of Vadakkumnatha temple is Lord Shiva known as 'Sree vadakkum nathan'. Kerala has 108 main shiva temples(maha shiva kshethram). In this 5 temples have more fame. Ettumanoor, Thalipparambu, Vaikom, Thriprangodu and Sri Vadkkumnathan. According to epics Parasurama is the founder of this temple.
Thekkinkadu ground(Teak foreset), the ground surrounding the temple is 64 Acres. The temple has 16 Acres and is located at the centre of the ground. The temple has four gopuras(entrance ) in four directions with lot of decorative arts and paintings. Three sreekovils (sanctum ) for Vadakkum nathan, shankaranarayana moorthy and Sreerama Swamy. Sree Parvathi Devi and Mahaganapathy also have separate places in the main Sreekovil. Shiva prathishta is self born(swayam bhoo) but it can not be seen because of the ghee covered by the abhishekams. The ghee at a height of 10 feet will not melt even in the summer for several years(Ney mala). It is a miracle and short pieces of ghee from the mound are taken as a medicine by devotees.

This temple has a lot of sub dieties. Besides other temples it will take more time to complete your visit according to the rituals. Goshalakrishnan, Nandikeswaran, Parasuraman, Simhodaran, Vedavyasan, Dharmashasthavu and the stone as the monument of the great Srishankara.
A strong belief exists that Sree shakara is the incarnation of Mahadeva. His parents were great devotees of this temple.
The great offering of this temple is 'neyyabhishekam'(pouring ghee over the idol ). Whenever the mound of ghee collapse then there will be an evil happening in Thrissur, is also a belief among devotees.
The vast area, the giant old trees and the thekkin kadu all will lead us to the harmony of nature and human beings in a divine atmosphere. Its not just a temple its a monument of our rich heritage and culture.

They celebrate birthdays with out coockies, we can send Raisins, dates, cashew nuts, almonds and other dried fruits instead of chocolates or cakes. Raisins and dates are also rich with Iron and Calcium. Chakka, Papaya, Mango, Aathakka and Pineapple are the common fruits available in Kerala.

Yesterday I saw the film 'Sukritham'(സുകൃതം) . The main theme is the inner healing powers of our body. A good movie with a lot of good songs but with a tragic end. 'Ennodothunarunna pularikale ennodothu kinavu kandu chirikkumiravukale yathra thudarunnu shubha yathra nernnu varoo.....'. Mammootty, Gouthami, NarendraPrasad and Manoj K Jayan
are the main actors.
We have the power to heal ourselves. Its a wonderful idea for me...
Today I read an article about a family in Kerala following naturopathy in its most successful way. The article was in 'Kanyaka', a women's magazine in malayalam.
In naturopathy all toxins are expelled from the body through fasting and other nature acceptable methods.

Advocate Joshi Jacob and Mrs Joshi working as a director of Kaladi Sanskrit University are the couples in the above story. They had three children, they are also following the way to defeat their illness. Its an interesting story for me because 'health is the real wealth'.

Within 2-4 days various FM programs had conquered Kochi. Kochi is rocking with all the programs not only youth but people from various phases of life also enjoying the competition between the broadcasting stations and the surprising gifts and many more....
News papers had reported about the hike in demand of FM Radios in penta menaka of Marine Drive. I am also trying to fill ton kanakkinu music with every minute of my life. My husband who is an electronic expert likes the quality of Radio Mango. But from my child hood I am in love with Mathrubhumi, so I like to tune Club FM 94.3.
Its a revolution in the field of broadcasting. Thanks for the various station managements for making Radio such a popular instrument. Advertisements play a major role anyhow music is a helaer for all type of situations. Without much effort we can listen music from various languages and various films....
My father, who is in changanacherry always enquiring me about the launching of new stations in Kottayam. He is also a music lover and he loves to hear music rather than to see. My husband's friend who is an auto driver telling us about the changes occured in their Auto stand after the launching of FM stations. Its a great thing to have FM in mobile sets. My husband also loves it because its a great relief in the unending blocks in the roads of Metro city. Advertisements had become a part of our life. Ads of FM radios are also rocking every where. People are in search for new avenues for entertainment and now radio is emerging as a rocking media.

FM is the type of Modulation used to transmit signals. The audio signals are Frequency modulated and transmitted. The other type of modulation used is AM. FM offers maximum clarity for sound but its transmission area is less. Different frequencies are allocated to different companies for their own transmission. Its also a stage for advertisement and thus they can regain their money.
Today Club FM had lauched in the trendy city of Kerala, offering a lot of fun and entertainment. Music is the real mix of these FM Stations. More youngsters are becoming regular audience of the FM stations.
I like the program 'Hello Joy Alukkas Wedding Centre' of the Kochi FM station. In midst of all the chaos of the kitchen I will try to listen to the sweet voice of Asha Latha, the Radio Jockey of the program. Then only I noticed the term Radio Jockey. Asha Latha and Balakrishnan are doing a good job. According to me the big advantage of Radio is you can listen it even if you are in a car, in kitchen, in shops, in travel etc. Let us hope people of Kerala will accept the fun and music of all the radios. Muthoot group is also on the way to their own station. Art of living is having their own station in which they give more on meditation and stree relieving methods.
